You Decide What They Study
School decided this for you. Fourth grade means these units in this order, whether or not your kid has asked a single question about any of them.
You do not have that constraint anymore. That is the part of homeschooling that took the longest to actually believe: if your kid wants to learn something, they can just learn it. This week. Not in high school, if the elective happens to be offered. Not after the required units are finished, which is another way of saying never.
Believing it is one thing. Doing something with it is harder, because the moment you decide your kid can study anything, you own the part school used to handle. Somebody has to break the subject into an order that makes sense, find material at the right reading level, and keep it going past the first burst of enthusiasm. That work is the reason most interest-led plans quietly turn back into a workbook by October.
This is the part of Primer that handles it. Two of our students give a clean example, because their interests could not be further apart.
Theo, who is eight, wanted to know how circuits work. Maya wants to be a horse veterinarian. Neither of those is a fourth-grade unit anywhere in the country. Here is exactly what it took to put each of them in a real course, screen by screen.
Say what they want to learn
One sentence, in your own words, in the Learning Topics box on the student's dashboard. No standards document to look up, no scope-and-sequence to buy, no reading list to assemble. You type the thing your kid said and press Add.

That is the whole input. Two sentences, one for each kid, written the way a parent would say it out loud. Notice that neither one names a subject, a grade level, or a skill. "Circuits and how they work" is not physical science. "Becoming a horse vet" is not biology. They are just what the kid is interested in, and that turns out to be enough to work from.
Review the path it builds
Primer turns that sentence into a ladder of skill units, sequenced so each one rests on the one before it. Theo got 15 units. Maya got 18. Both appear in the same Path view as every other subject, with the same controls: drag any unit to reorder it, skip one, or mark it mastered if your student already knows it.

Read the first rungs of each ladder and you can see the sequencing decision being made. Theo does not start with voltage or Ohm's law. He starts with electricity in daily life, the lamp and the toaster, then the parts of a circuit, then what happens when the loop is broken, and only then lights a bulb. Maya does not start with equine anatomy. She starts with what a vet actually does all day, then basic horse anatomy, then how to stand near a 1,200-pound animal without getting hurt.
That order matters more than the topic does. A path that opens on the abstract definition loses an eight-year-old in the first ten minutes. A path that opens on something they have already seen in your kitchen gives them somewhere to put the next idea.
The path stays yours to edit. If unit three is a repeat of something your kid did at a museum camp last summer, mark it mastered. If they are impatient to get to the bulb, drag it up. Nothing about the generated order is locked, and the numbering resequences around your changes. The same controls are covered in From Intake to First Lessons.
Start the first lesson
Then Primer builds unit one as a full lesson, with the same five steps as any other subject: Lesson, Unplugged, Puzzle, Practice, Exit Ticket. A custom topic is not a lighter-weight version of school work. It goes through the same machinery, gets the same read-aloud audio, the same key vocabulary highlighted in amber, the same hand-picked video to watch together, and the same exit ticket at the end.

Maya What Vets Do
The objective line at the top of each is worth reading closely, because it is the thing that keeps a custom topic from drifting into trivia. Theo's is "spot everyday things that use electricity and tell what job the electricity helps them do." Maya's is to learn what a horse veterinarian does, how that vet helps sick or injured horses, and how horse care is similar to and different from caring for a pet dog. Those are testable. Somebody either can do them at the end of the lesson or cannot, which is what the exit ticket checks.
Both lessons run about thirty minutes and both open with vocabulary the student will need for the next several units. Theo's lesson establishes what it means for an object to use electricity, and that electricity produces light, sound, motion, or heat. Maya's establishes veterinarian, then horse veterinarian as a specialization, then the idea that most of the job is preventing problems rather than responding to emergencies. Unit two in each path assumes those words are known.
Same product, same day, two different ladders
It is worth sitting with how different those two paths are, given that they came from the same product on the same afternoon, from two sentences typed a minute apart.
Theo, 8, circuits
Fifteen units of physical science, starting from the appliances in his own house and building toward switches, conductors and closed loops. Reads like an introductory electronics course, because that is what it is.
Maya, horse vet
Eighteen units that mix biology, animal husbandry, safety and career knowledge. No school subject contains this combination, which is exactly why it never gets offered.
Neither ladder is a repackaged version of a generic template with the nouns swapped. The units are different in kind, not just in name, because the two topics genuinely require different foundations in a different order.
Think past the school subjects
A custom topic does not have to fit a subject name, and the most interesting ones do not. Once you stop translating your kid's interest into the nearest school department, the range opens up considerably.
If your kid wants to be an electrician, that is a path in electricity and a path in running a business: estimates, invoices, what a job costs against what you charge, why the second one has to be bigger. A kid who wants to make games gets logic and coordinate geometry with a reason attached to them. Beekeeping. Welding. Songwriting. Aviation weather. Dog training. Marine biology. Sewing. Small engine repair. Baking, which is fractions and ratios that you get to eat.
The pattern is that a real-world pursuit carries academic content inside it, and pulls that content along in the right order automatically. Nobody has to convince a kid who wants to bid a job that percentages matter. The percentages are how you find out whether you made any money.
Where reading, writing and math go
The obvious worry: if my kid spends the fall on horses, what happens to the actual subjects?
They keep running underneath all of it. A custom topic is added to a student's path alongside reading, writing, math, science and social studies, not instead of them. Theo's circuits path did not replace his math. Maya's vet path did not replace her reading. Each one is another line on the same dashboard, with the same weekly progress reporting, and you decide how much of the week it gets. If you want it to be Friday only, make it Friday only.
What changes is not the amount of core academic work. What changes is that the thing your kid is actually curious about stops being the reward for finishing school and starts counting as school. That reframing does more for a reluctant student than any amount of encouragement, because it is not encouragement. It is just true.
How to write a topic that builds a good path
A few things we have learned about the sentence itself, since it is the only input and it does shape the result.
- Use your kid's words, not your translation of them. "How do circuits work" builds a better path than "more science." The first is answerable, and an answerable question is what the sequencing works from.
- Concrete beats broad. "Becoming a horse vet" produced eighteen well-ordered units. "Animals" would have produced a survey that goes nowhere in particular. If your kid's interest is genuinely broad, pick the specific corner of it they talk about most.
- An ambition is a fine topic. You do not have to convert "I want to be a marine biologist" into a subject before typing it. The ambition carries the content, and it usually carries better structure than the subject name would.
- One topic at a time. Add a second one after the first path has some units behind it. Two brand-new paths on top of core subjects is more than a week holds, and the fastest way to sour a kid on something they were excited about is to schedule it into a chore.
- Read the path before the first lesson. It takes two minutes and it is the moment you catch a sequencing choice you disagree with, while reordering is still trivial.
Tip of the day
Ask your kid what they want to learn and write down what they say, not your translation of it. "How do circuits work" builds a better path than "more science."
What a custom topic is not
Two honest caveats, because a feature that claims to do everything is not believable.
First, a custom topic is a course, not a credential. If you need a transcript line that a specific state or program will recognize, build that from the standards-aligned subjects and treat the custom path as the thing that makes school worth showing up to. Primer tracks both; only one of them is designed to satisfy a reviewer.
Second, a generated path is a strong first draft, not a finished syllabus. You know things about your kid that a sentence cannot carry, and the reorder, skip and mark-mastered controls exist because you are expected to use them. The families who get the most out of this spend two minutes on the path before the first lesson, not zero.
Try it with whatever they asked you this week
There is almost certainly a question your kid has asked you in the last month that you did not have a good answer for, and did not have time to chase down. That question is a topic. It takes one sentence and about a minute, and you will know within a few screens whether the path it built is any good, because you can read the whole ladder before anyone commits to a single lesson.
Theo's took one sentence. So did Maya's. Neither of them is waiting for high school.
