Cinematic Lessons: Every Idea, Shown as Well as Told

Every Primer lesson now opens in a richer, more immersive view built for students, on the web and on iPad: full screen, one idea per screen, with a visual drawn for that idea. No distractions, better pictures, and a better shot at the idea sticking. Here is what changed, how to use it, and why we think it is the biggest improvement to a Primer lesson since read-aloud.

Two things changed in this release: how a lesson looks on the screen, and what appears next to the words. What has not changed is the part of Primer that matters most. Every lesson is still generated for your student alone, themed to their interests and shaped by what they already know. Cinematic view is a new way to experience that lesson, not a new lesson.

Cinematic is now the default view for students. Open a lesson from the student dashboard and you land on the lesson page, with the five steps across the top and the objective under the title. Press the amber Play Lesson button and the lesson opens in Cinematic view.

It begins on a title page: the lesson illustration, themed to your student, the objective in an amber chip, the time it will take, and a Begin button. Nothing else. The first time a student opens a lesson after the update they get a one-time choice between watching it as a story or reading it, and Primer remembers the answer.

Look at the picture for a second. Theo loves baseball, so his fractions lesson opens in a dugout. But the picture is doing more than decorating: the boy is holding a chocolate bar broken into two pieces next to one broken into smaller pieces. The illustration is asked to make the lesson's idea visible inside the student's world, so a student can often guess what the lesson is about before they read a word.

If you or your student prefer the previous layout, the settings icon inside the lesson still offers Full and Pages, and a parent can set a different default for a student. The lesson personalization help page covers those options.

Then one idea at a time

From the title page, each idea gets its own screen, and the view becomes immersive in the literal sense: the lesson art blurs softly behind the words and drifts a little, the way a documentary lingers on a still photograph. Text is large and set for reading at a distance, key words are in amber, and progress is marked along the top. Nothing else competes for attention.

Read aloud works the way it does everywhere in Primer. What is new is that the narrator can drive the lesson: press play once on the first idea and the lesson advances on its own, pausing briefly after the last sentence of each screen so the highlight lands before the next idea appears. A student who would rather go at their own pace leaves it paused and uses the arrows.

Behind the scenes, Primer decides where one idea ends and the next begins. A heading always starts a fresh screen. A sentence like "That means:" is never left dangling at the bottom of one screen with its answer on the next. An equation or a list is never separated from the sentence that introduces it. The type size then adjusts so each screen fits without scrolling, which is why a short idea gets very large type and a fuller paragraph reads more like a book.

Visuals built for the idea on the screen

The bigger change is what sits next to the words. Primer now draws a visual for the specific idea on the screen, not a stock picture that is roughly related. The AI writing the lesson decides what should be drawn and fills in the details: two bars, one in halves and one in eighths, with the first half and the first four eighths shaded. The app then draws it, with the same rulers and the same colors every time, so a number line always has the right number of ticks and a fraction bar is always split into truly equal parts. Grade 3 The Thirteen Colonies

Maps deserve a note of their own. A map drawn on the fly uses modern borders, which is fine for "where is the Mississippi" and wrong for "where were the colonies." For history, Primer instead reaches into a curated set of real public-domain maps that covers the ground a K-12 history sequence actually visits, from ancient Egypt and Rome through the Silk Road, the Age of Exploration, the Thirteen Colonies, the Civil War, and the two World Wars. Each comes with a key written in plain language, because a period map's colors are not self-explanatory to a third grader, and a source line, because we think students should get used to seeing one.

High school The unit circle

Every figure shares one palette, and the first color in it is the same amber used for key words in the text and the progress bar, so a figure never looks pasted in from somewhere else. The colors were also chosen in an order that stays distinguishable for colorblind students. Wide figures like number lines and timelines get the full width of the screen under the text; tall ones like maps and pies sit beside it. Any figure can be tapped to fill the screen.

A summary to wrap it up

Every lesson now ends with a short summary: what your student learned, restated in five plain bullets, before they move on to Unplugged. The bullets are written for the student's reading level, never give away an exit ticket answer, and drop in one at a time so they get read rather than skimmed. It is a quick review for them and an easy way for you to see what was covered without sitting through the whole lesson.

Kindergarten Word Problems

Why this is a big improvement for students

A lot of ideas are hard to hold in words alone. Equivalent fractions, jumps on a number line, where the colonies sat on the coast. Drawing the idea while explaining it is what a good teacher does at a whiteboard, and it is the part of teaching that has been hardest to put into software without either drawing wrong pictures or drawing none. Cinematic view gives every lesson that whiteboard. Four things about it matter more than they might first appear.

One idea at a time

A page of text asks a student to decide where to look. A screen with one idea on it makes that decision for them. For a student who reads slowly, gets lost mid-paragraph, or is easily pulled off task, that is the difference between finishing a lesson and drifting out of it.

Seen and heard together

The narrator reads the sentence, the sentence lights up, and the picture of the thing being described is right there. Hearing, reading, and seeing the same idea at the same moment is how most of us actually learned fractions, from a teacher at a board. Now it is how a Primer lesson works by default.

Pictures you can trust

Because the app draws the figures rather than generating a picture of one, the number line has the right ticks, the fraction bars are truly equal parts, and the unit circle is a circle. A math lesson with a wrong picture is worse than one with no picture. These are never wrong in that way.

A review, every time

Most lessons end and the student moves on. Cinematic lessons end on the five things worth remembering, in words the student can read, right before they go do the hands-on activity. The idea gets one more pass before it has a chance to fade.

There is also the simple matter of what it feels like. An immersive lesson that opens on a title page with your kid's own world in the picture, then walks through one idea at a time with a narrator, feels like something made for them. Because it was.

Tip of the day

Tap the full screen icon in the top corner of any lesson. It hides everything else on the screen, browser tabs included, so the lesson is the only thing in front of your student. Press it again, or Esc, to come back.

Still their lesson

None of this changes what a Primer lesson is underneath. It is still generated for one student, in the theme they love, at the reading level they are at, building on what they have already mastered. The dugout is still Theo's because Theo loves baseball, and the interest rotates from lesson to lesson so he is not in the dugout every day. Every illustration is drawn in a style chosen for the student's age, from picture book at six to something closer to a photograph in high school, and every character is original. The lesson still runs through the same five steps, still has the same read-aloud, and still ends in the same exit ticket.

Two honest limits. The set of figures Primer can draw covers a lot of ground but not everything, and a lesson about something outside it will still lean on words and illustrations. And the summary is a review, not a report card; the exit ticket is still where mastery is measured, and the parent dashboard is still where you read it.
